I'm calling a guy to talk price in like 10 minutes, but have no idea if they're even technically legal/if they're somehow bad for the car.

Where do you live? And I will throw this out there summarily right now: studded tires aren't much better than good studless tires in the snow and ice and studless are MUCH better everywhere else.

If you get enough ice, absolutely worth it. Not bad for the car. They do have a habit of abusing dry pavement though and the road noise if you're on dry pavement is nothing short of annoying.

A lot of places don't allow studded tires. They're not the greatest for driving on pavement anyway. They help when going in deep snow, but if you drive on pavement for a while the studs will get worn down into nice little ball-bearings, which don't help much for traction. Studless winter tires are a much better option for most situations.

they are noisy, will wear down the studs if there is no snow, not sure if the traction is essentially worse if there is no snow.

Yup, if you love your roads, don't drive on them with studded tires dry. Tears them up.
It would be like [REDACTED] with [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] without any moisture.

With modern tire technology, I wouldn't bother with them anymore.
I used them for a number of winters. The noise wasn't bad (I kind of liked it actually) but I don't think they were really all that.

if they catch you in ontario with studs, they tow your car on a flat bed truck. + fine(s)

A lot of states have banned them because of damage to the road. (You can do a cool, sparky burnout with them, though).

I'm actually using them for the first time this year and I love them. There was a good half inch thick sheet of ice covering my driveway this morning and I had absolutely no problem getting up or down the hill (I forgot something at home on my way to work) that the propane delivery truck couldn't manage to make it up. I also work in the asphalt industry, so I'm doing my part to keep myself gainfully employed.

Legal? Depends on where you live ... Bad for the Car? Naw - better than hitting something on ice ...
